State Plant Breeding Insititute

Since 1905, the State Plant Breeding Institute (LSA) at the University of Hohenheim has been a leading institution for research and development in plant breeding. We use modern breeding programmes across 12 crop species, precision phenotyping (including drone and image analysis platforms), a state-of-the-art molecular laboratory and omics and data science approaches to scientifically unravel genotype-phenotype-environment interactions under real-world conditions. By developing, testing and commercialising its own crop varieties, the LSA embodies the motto “Climate-smart, healthy and sustainable food systems start with genetics”, linking scientific excellence directly to innovation in real-world agricultural and food systems.
